How to get to Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau?

By car:

  • Neuschwanstein is located in Bavaria, Germany, 5 kilometers from the Austrian border. The distance to Munich is 120 km and Stuttgart is 220 km.
  • The village of Hohenschwangau is only 3 kilometers from Füssen and 8 kilometers from the A7 motorway (exit Füssen).

Public transport from Munich:

  • Take the train from Munich to Füssen (Book your train tickets at bahn.com. From Füssen train station you can take bus 73 or 78 (stop Hohenschwangau Neuschwanstein castle, Sfagnum), more info and timetable on www.dbregiobus-bayern.de.

Accessibility + Parking Neuschwanstein

The Neuschwanstein castle is located in Hohenschwangau, a small village near Schwangau and Füssen. Parking at the castle is not allowed and you will have to do in the small village Hohenschwangau (parking P1 to P4). Enter the 'Alpseestrasse' in your navigation and you will automatically see the signs of the parkings.

The parking costs per day are:
  • Car € 10
  • Camper or caravan € 13
  • Motor € 3

From the parkings you'll have the following options to reach the Neuschwanstein castle:

  1. By foot: The castle is 1,5 kilometres uphill from the parking lot; a hike of about 40 minutes.
  2. By carriage: Carriages depart from Hotel Müller (Alpseestraße) which will leave you at 450 meters from the entrance of the castle in 20 minutes. You will have to walk uphill for the last ten minutes. You can buy your tickets directly from the coachman (Uphill ticket: 8 euros, downhill 4 euros).
  3. Shuttlebus: These buses leave from P4 (Alpsee). Consider waiting times in high season:
    • Uphill 3 euros / Downhill 2 euros / Return 3.50 euros.
    • Tickets for sale at the driver.
    • Buses run without a fixed timetable. Last bus down at 18:45 in the summer and 16:45 in the winter (if the road is passable).
    • The buses can not directly reach the castle, but drop you off near the Marienbrücke, where you have a magnificent view of the castle from the bridge. From this point you'll have to walk 500 meters downhill to the entrance of the castle.
